WINDOW WARRANTY QUESTIONS.
A warranty offers protection against problems with materials or manufacturing defects on your new replacement windows. In some cases, the warranty may go so far as to offer replacement services for accidents such as broken glass. But be sure to read your window warranty carefully to make sure you understand the following:
- What parts of the window are covered by the warranty?
- What parts are NOT covered?
- How long will the warranty be in effect?
- How is the claim to be filed?
- Are labor costs covered?
- Who is responsible for warranty work, the manufacturer or the installation company?
- Who is responsible for problems that are the result of installation issues?
- Is the glass package covered in the warranty?
- Is the warranty transferable if you sell your home?
WARRANTY LENGTH
Many “lifetime” warranties are usually a guarantee for the lifetime of the product on the market rather than the lifetime of the consumer. The exact meaning should be defined in the actual warranty documentation. If a product has been discontinued and is no longer available, the warranty may be extended for a longer period. Other warranties are set for more specific period of time, anywhere from 20 years to 50 years.
CERTIFIED INSTALLATION IS IMPORTANT!
In almost every case, the manufacturer’s warranty will NOT BE VALID unless the window was installed by a company that has been certified by the factory. This means that the company’s installers have been trained in the proper installation techniques and can be expected to install the window correctly. Non-certified installers may not follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and therefore, the warranty will not be effective. Twin Cities Siding Professionals is a Marvin Authorized Replacement Contractor, so you can have peace of mind that your job will be done according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.
WORKMANSHIP GUARANTEE
High quality window installation companies will offer their own guarantee on top of the window manufacturer’s warranty. This guarantee, while often for a shorter period of time than the factory warranty, will cover problems associated with installation issues. Typically an installation guarantee covers labor costs and lasts 1-5 years.
